We the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, hold very dear our charism and spirit, embodied in: The gift of Mother Mary Charles Walker - known in Calabar, Nigeria, as Sister Magdalen, who by a deepfelt vivid call for the Nigerian Mission in answer to Bishop Shanahan's appeal, inspired and nurtured the vocation of the first four Foundation members of our Congregation in the year 1926 to 1933, to the stage of postulancy, with a simple Rule of life.

She, the woman of deep faith, apostolic zeal and holy life was the original inspiration which gave life and spirit to the Congregation. She instilled in the Foundation members, a spirituality rooted in trust in Divine Providence in imitation of the abandonment to God's will shown at the Annunciation. From her we inherit an apostolic spirituality which is all-embracing, as we strive to respond to the needs of a growing missionary Church.

In the spirit of continuous fidelity to Christ, the Church and our charism, we dedicate ourselves to continue the mission of Christ for which we have been called and consecrated, by continually answering this vocation in the words on Mary,"Behold the Handmaid of the Lord".

The Congregation has grown and we are in different parts of Africa, Europe, America etc.  The Congregation has been divided into four different Provinces for effective leadership administration and control. These are our present ruling Council members.
